Twice a year, Noir Market opens a warehouse of twentieth-century furniture and lighting to a list of 1,200 collectors. There is no shop window and no second chance. The 2024 autumn drop needed a world that felt as considered as the objects — and a site that could take the hit at 10:00 sharp.
The brief
Forty-two lots. Fourteen days. A printed gazette, a film, a holding page that became a live room, and a tone that never slipped into auction-house theatrics. The last drop had crashed in the first eight minutes.
The work
Creative direction started with the objects: chrome, bakelite, a particular blue that kept appearing in the lot photography. We built a colour and type system that could live on a shipping crate, a stamp and a 12-second film title. The gazette was set like a shipping manifest, not a lookbook.
The site was engineered as a timed room: a queue that told the truth, lots that loaded as images first, bidding that did not require a tutorial. When the fortnight ended, the site went dark on purpose. Scarcity was not a marketing line. It was the architecture.
For the first time the drop felt like the warehouse: precise, a little severe, and over when it was over. Anouk Veld, Founder, Noir Market
What changed
The site held. All forty-two lots placed within four days. The gazette is now a collecting object of its own — which was not the brief, and we will take it. The spring drop is already on the wall.
